A Simple Approach to Prayer

When I first gave my life to Christ, I struggled with prayer. It wasn’t that I didn’t know what to pray for, but I felt pressure to sound like the seasoned believers around me. I wanted my prayers to be “perfect”—impressive to God and those listening. This mindset became a roadblock, turning my prayer time into a performance, rather than a genuine moment with God.

Prayer isn’t about sounding impressive. It’s not about delivering a well-crafted speech or quoting scripture flawlessly. Prayer is simply about being real with God—coming to Him authentically, because He already knows everything about us. God desires a close, personal connection, and He values sincerity over perfection. Only Him is perfect and makes us perfect. Apart from Him, we cannot be perfect.

Here are a few insights that have helped me grow in my prayer life:

1. Pray the Word of God

It’s essential to align your prayers with God’ s Word, not just your own desires (1 John 5:14-15). To do that, you need to know scripture. The more familiar you are with what God has said, the more confidently you can stand on His promises in prayer. But be mindful—this isn’t just about tossing around Bible verses. Even the enemy can quote scripture, as we see when Satan tempted Jesus (Matthew 4:6). It’s about connecting deeply with the Word, letting it shape your prayers.

2. Let the Holy Spirit Guide You

Don’t rely solely on memorized scripture or pre-planned words. As you pray, let the Holy Spirit guide your heart. When your heart is opened and submitted to God, the Holy Spirit brings the Word to life, giving you new understanding that applies directly to your situation. No amount of church attendance or meetings can teach you this—it comes through spending time in God’s presence, meditating on His Word, and developing a personal relationship with Him. The Bible reminds us, “If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask God” (James 1:5).

3. Experience the Word as Living and Active

The Bible isn’t just a book—it’s living and active because the Word of God is Jesus Himself (John 1:1-5). When you pray, you’re not just speaking words into the air—you’re calling on the living God to act on your behalf. The Word is powerful; He creates, gives life, and brings light into every situation. When we call upon the Word, we call upon Jesus, and He responds.

4. Pray with Faith

Faith is the key that unlocks the power of our prayers. Your words and your thoughts help bring God’s Word to life in the physical world (Ephesians 3:20-21). Scripture tells us that God can do far more than we can ask or imagine, but it’s our faith that activates His power within us. Without faith, it’s impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6), and without it, our prayers can feel and be empty.

Take the example of the woman with the issue of blood (Luke 8:45-47). She wasn’t the only one pressing through the crowd to touch Jesus, but her faith set her apart. While many sought healing, her belief in His power was so strong that her simple touch brought healing to her body. That’s the kind of faith that makes prayer effective—believing with all your heart that God will move on your behalf.

The heart of prayer isn’t in the words we choose, but in the faith and sincerity we bring to it. When we align our hearts with God, trust in His Word, and let the Holy Spirit guide us, prayer becomes a powerful way to experience His presence and His promises.
